Fine Arts Program / ROMPP

a woman painting a cardinal sitting on a branchThe mission of the Center for Excellence in Disabilities Fine Arts program, ROMPP (Real Opportunities Make People Productive), is to support artists who have disabilities so they may achieve their goals for the future, whether interested in the arts as a profession, hobby or just for exploration. ROMPP staff act as navigators linking people with a diverse range of community opportunities. The essence of this program involves increasing access to community resources to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities in the fine arts. When asked what they liked best about the CED Fine Arts Program, one participant said:

"That's like asking someone their favorite song. My self esteem and sense of self worth, my social skills have improved. Seeing other artists, their faces and how this has affected their lives has been inspirational: you don't forget stuff like that. It made me feel proud to be a part of something like that" (ROMPP Artist)

If you would like to be a part of ROMPP mailing list, list serv, and Calling Tree, please contact Debbie Cain at 304-293-4692 x 1159. Participation in these activities allows you to keep abreast of programs and services in your community, upcoming art events, and to talk to other artists about your work. WVU Center for Excellence in Disabilities conducts free programmatic and accessibility assessments for fine arts facilities and events (i.e. how to set up an exhibit to accommodate wheelchairs, how to locate and engage sign language interpreters for presentations; how to make the arts classrooms and curriculum accessible). These assessments follow the nationally recognized protocols. The assessors give instruction on universal design of program accessibility (i.e. how to adjust instruction to meet the needs of artists). For more information please contact Regina Mayolo at 304-293-4692 x 1142.
